PRESS RELEASE – November 5th, 2014

Four Local Gymnasts Selected To National Developmental Team, To Attend Camp At The National Team Training Center

November 5, 2014 (Sterling, Virginia)—Four young gymnasts from Loudoun Gymnastics Center in Ster-ling, Virginia have been selected to the National TOPs Developmental Team, joining a long list of Olym-pians who began their careers in the TOPs program at the Karolyi Ranch. The gymnasts earned their na-tional team spots through a series of strength, ability and skill testing, beating out over 1,800 other gym-nasts nationwide. The girls, Naomi Heit (10 years old from Great Falls, VA), Meadow Swanson (10 years old from Sterling, VA), Alexis Chapman (8 years old from Ashburn, VA) and Silvana Runfola (7 years old from Leesburg, VA) train between 24-30 hours per week at Loudoun Gymnastics Center with their coaches, Russian-born husband and wife duo Alla Tichomirova and Anatoli Tichomirov.“Sometimes it’s difficult to balance the demands of school, training and friends,” says Heit, a fourth grader at Colvin Run Elementary School in Vienna. “I leave school early four days a week for training, but I always tell myself that hard work given time, will defeat talent. And so far that’s proving to be true.”TOPs (Talent Opportunity Program) is a USAG (USA Gymnastics) talent search and educational program for female gymnasts ages 7-10 and their coaches. During the months of June and July the gymnasts test their physical abilities and skills at the state level. Once all of the state scores are collected, the top 300 girls ages 8, 9 and 10 are invited to participate in the next level of testing, the National TOPs test, held in October at the Karolyi Ranch and National Training Center in Huntsville, Texas.Heit, Swanson and Chapman spent two days testing there last month under the watchful eyes of national team coaches such as Valeri Liukin who coached his daughter, Nastia Liukin, to fame as the 2008 Olympic All Around Champion.“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to be evaluated by the National Team’s coaches and staff, but it’s also a bit intimidating,” says Swanson, a fifth grader at Countryside Elementary in Sterling. “You have to remember they are regular people and keep your focus during your workout.”DSC_0017Tichomirova puts the girls in pressure-filled situations to prepare them for this type of testing. “Gymnas-tics is 90% mental,” she says. “I am super proud of my girls. It is very intense. The girls all did the best that they could do and they did very well.”They did so well that all three of the girls who tested at the Karolyi Ranch were then selected among the top 100 in the country as members of the National TOPs team. In addition to being named to the national team, the girls will each travel back to the National Team Training Center next month to attend one of two TOPs camps offered and work with national team coaches. Chapman will attend the “TOPs A Camp” December 3-7 and Heit and Swanson will attend the “TOPs B Camp” December 7-11.
“I’m excited to have made the TOPs A Camp,” says Chapman, a third grader at Sanders Corner Elementary in Ashburn. “I guess we are the top of the TOPs!”For 7 year olds such as Runfola, they only test at the state levels. The top fifty 7 year olds in the country are then named to the national “Diamond Team,” which is the highest accolade for a gymnast that young.“I’m excited to be a Diamond Team member,” says Runfola. “I also am very happy for my teammates who get to go to the Ranch. Hopefully I will get to go next year.”In addition to its recent national team success, Loudoun Gymnastics Center and Tichomirova were recognized in the state of Virginia as having the 10th best optionals level girls program for the 2013-2014 season.“Some of the gyms we compete against have over 30 girls in one level,” says gym owner and former Chinese National Team member, Xiaokui Ma. “ We have a small optionals team in comparison, but it is quality, not quantity. We can work with gymnasts of all levels and help them achieve whatever their goals may be.”
